See You In My 19th Life has officially reached its mid-way point. In episodes 1-5, the complex relationships between the four main characters are established, and midway through the series, viewers learn their lives are more entwined than initially thought.
Episode 6 tackles major revelations, confirms a few suspicions, and leaves viewers rethinking certain characters’ first impressions.
Here are our thoughts on how the first half of the K-Drama has wrapped.
Ban Ji Eum (portrayed by Shin Hye Sun) had been struggling with whether or not to reveal the truth about her ability to remember her past lives and the identity of her 18th life with Moon Seo Ha (portrayed by Ahn Bo Hyun) and Yoon Cho Won (portrayed by Ha Yoon Kyung).
At the end of episode 5, she finally reveals to Yoon Cho Won that she was her older sister Yoon Ju Won in her 18th life. The scene continues into episode 6, and its emotional delivery from actresses Shin Hye Sun and Ha Yoon Kyung was so strong it became tangible to the audience.
Ha Yoon Kyung shows unrestrained childlike emotion when she realizes she has reconnected with her late older sister, drawing viewers into the scene. The on-screen chemistry between her and Shin Hye Sun is clearly evident as Shin Hye Sun steps into the role of an older sister and brings the wisdom and maturity of someone who has lived 18 other lives to her character’s serious moments.
The grand reveal was given the moment it deserved. It didn’t feel rushed, and it had the emotional complexity one might expect when faced with what seems to be an impossible situation.
Character Kang Min Ki (portrayed by Lee Chae Min) may not be the bad guy, which netizens had previously suspected. The show created an uneasy atmosphere whenever his character was present, using dark lighting, ominous music, and ambiguous behavior to leave viewers constantly guessing his intentions until now.
The name of the mystery woman who interacts with Kang Min Ki was finally revealed as Han Na (portrayed by Lee Han Na), and additional clues were given which seem to allude to her being Moon Seo Ha’s deceased mother reincarnated, deepening the show’s storyline and Ban Ji Eum’s one-of-a-kind connection with Moon Seo Ha.
Until now, it had seemed that Kang Min Ki played a hand in the illness of Yoon Ju Won’s niece, Kim Ae Kyung (portrayed by Cha Chung Hwa).
This also turned into a plot twist when it was revealed that Ban Ji Eum’s confession of her identity to figures in her past life would eventually lead to complications, and it’s suggested that Ban Ji Eum revealing her true identity to Kim Ae Kyung caused her illness.
This reveal threatens to complicate Ban Ji Eum and Moon Seo Ha’s already delicate friendship and their possible progression into a romantic connection if Ban Ji Eum cannot reveal herself as his late childhood love.
The biggest shock of the episode, although signs pointed toward this conclusion since the beginning of the show, was when it was revealed that the car accident involving Moon Seo Ha and Yoon Ju Won was planned, and Yoon Ju Won’s death wasn’t an accident, but a murder.
While that had been alluded to, it may have been more surprising that Moon Seo Ha was the intended target in the accident, and his father’s personal driver, who drove the vehicle during the accident, also died.
The driver is revealed to be Ha Do Yoon (portrayed by Ahn Dong Goo) and Ha Do Jin’s father.
As a viewer, it was difficult to believe that Moon Seo Ha didn’t know the identity of the driver who died in the accident. Especially considering the driver was the father of his best friend and secretary.
It seems the more answers given the more questions are left in the viewers’ minds, including the identity of the person (or people) who hired the driver of the other vehicle in Moon Seo Ha and Yoon Ju Won’s crash.
Shady actions from Moon Seo Ha’s father, Moon Jeong Hoon (portrayed by Choi Jin Ho), and his secret meeting toward the end of the episode may leave viewers wondering if or how he may have been involved in the orchestration of his son’s accident.
Throughout the first half of the season, viewers share in the conflicted uncertainty of main character Ban Ji Eum as they’re constantly left questioning the characters’ intentions and alliances. With six episodes remaining, we’ll see what direction these new mysteries take the show.
So far, it’s kept us enthralled, from the actors’ performances to the constant twists and captivating visual storytelling.
