The Don franchise fans received almost anything they wanted from Farhan Akhtar. While teasing the announcement of Don 3, he also made it clear that Shah Rukh Khan would not return to play the film’s renowned title character.
On Tuesday, Farhan posted a teaser video for an announcement on his social media handle. His post had no caption, but the teaser spoke for itself. It highlighted the number ‘3’ printed in the screen’s centre. The figure’s typography and design seem eerily familiar. If there were any unturned stones, the background music resembled a slight version of “Main Hoon Don,” the theme song from the film Don.
The phrase “A New Era Begins” also caught the internet’s attention. The franchise’s followers then began to speculate if it meant Shah Rukh wouldn’t reprise his role as the main character in the threequel.
A few hours later, Farhan released a long tweet on Twitter confirming that a new actor will carry on Don’s legacy. Farhan penned, “In 1978, a character created by Salim-Javed and portrayed by Mr Amitabh Bachchan with effortless elan captured the imagination of theatregoers across the country. That enigmatic character was Don.
In 2006, Don was reimagined and brought to life by Shah Rukh Khan in his own irresistibly charming way. From Don’s sardonic wit to his cool but menacing fury, Shah Rukh embodied his persona. As a writer & director, I had a great time creating not one but two ‘Don’ films with Shah Rukh and both experiences remain very close to my heart.
The time has now come to take the legacy of Don forward, and joining us in this new interpretation will be an actor whose talent and versatility I have long admired. We hope that you will show him the love you have so graciously and generously shown to Mr Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan.

Don 3 will be produced by Farhan and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment. It will be written and directed by Farhan, who will return to that turf over 12 years after Don 2.
