Conflicts amongst the majority of Meitei residing in the Imphal Valley and the Kukis from the hills have occurred in Manipur’s northeastern state since May of this year. Amid this, on July 19, a video showing two women assaulted, naked and paraded in Manipur appeared on social media. The entire world has been shaken by the viral clip making the rounds on social media. Bollywood stars like Richa Chadha, Sonu Sood, Kiara Advani, and Akshay Kumar have all responded to the horrific incident on social media platforms. Priyanka Chopra reacted to the violence by demanding “swift justice.”
Priyanka Chopra uploaded a message on her Instagram Stories in which she reacted to the violence against women in Manipur. She penned, “It took a video going viral… 77 days after the heinous crimes were committed… before action was taken. Rationale? Reasons? None matter–irrespective of what and why, situational or circumstantial, we cannot allow women to be pawns in any games. The collective shame and anger need to be channelled now in a unified voice for just one thing- swift justice.” Priyanka shared the message and included the hashtags “#justiceforthewomeninmanipur” and “#togetherinshame.”
Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar expressed his outrage after being “shaken and disgusted” by the brutality against women in Manipur.
Actress Kiara Advani tweeted, “The video of violence against women in Manipur is horrifying and has shaken me to the core. I pray the women get justice at the earliest. Those responsible must face the most SEVERE punishment they deserve.”
Actress Jaya Bachchan expressed her grief and stated, “I felt so bad, I couldn’t see the entire video. I was ashamed. This happened in May but has gone viral now. But no one has said a single word in sympathy. This is about women’s safety. But you say things like we have selected 50 per cent women for a panel. Hanthi ke daat hai.”
The public’s outrage over the horrific act spread across social media platforms. There are several trending hashtags on Twitter right now, including “Manipur Violence,” “Enough is Enough,” “Shameful,” “Manipur,” “Meitei,” and “Nirbhaya.”
While this was happening, netizens urged quick action to stop the harassment of women. Recent reports claimed that the police had detained the main accused in the rape case.
