‘Barbie’ Making Her Home Debut With Digital & PVOD Release Next Week

-

Having become Warner Bros. and 2023’s top grossing movie of the year at $1.38 billion worldwide, Barbie will become available in homes next week on Tuesday, Sept. 12 for digital purchase and rental.

The Greta Gerwig-directed, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling starring pic based on the Mattel doll will be available to own on digital for $29.99 and 48-hour rental via PVOD at $24.99 on participating digital platforms, i.e. Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play, Vudu, and more. Deadline spotted an ad on Air Canada at the end of July which mentioned that Barbie would be available in-flight this month.

Barbie arrives in homes after a 54-day theatrical window, having opened on July 21. That’s a much shorter window than what Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick had which was an 89-day window; that pic hitting homes on Aug. 23 last year after a May 27 theatrical release.

Barbie, in her seventh weekend at the domestic box office, racked up $13.2M over the 4-day Labor Day weekend taking her running stateside total to $612.2M. Through 46 days at the box office, Barbie is pacing 2% ahead of Top Gun: Maverick at the same point in time; that Tom Cruise movie, the actor’s highest, ending its run at $718.7M; $1.49 billion worldwide.

Despite Barbie heading into homes earlier than Top Gun: Maverick, it’s the type of family film that could keep playing and playing into the fall on the big screen, reaping double dips in both theaters and homes. On Sept. 22, Barbie will get a one week run in Imax, those prints featuring a new post credits sequence.

Warners is going to need as much Barbie cash that it can get:  The conglom said today it’s looking at a hit of $300 million to $500 million in adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) this year due to the work stoppages.
