On Instagram, Fat Joe recalled Trump’s abhorrent conduct following Hurricane Maria, writing, “The man threw towels at you and blocked monetary help in Hurricane Maria and also you Bori’s suppose he is your man WAKE UP VOTE!!!!” Also on Instagram, “Despacito” singer Luis Fonsi wrote, “I really like roasts, belief me, I get it, BUT…that is removed from comedy. Not now, not in opposition to my island, my folks. Hell nah! … Going down this racist path ain’t it.”
During a livestream on Twitch, vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz and Congressmember Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized Tony’s phrases. Tim requested, “Who is that jack-wad?” whereas AOC mentioned, “When you’ve gotten some a-hole calling Puerto Rico ‘floating rubbish,’ know that that is what they give thought to you. It’s what they give thought to anybody who makes much less cash than them.”
Even some Republicans denounced Tony’s feedback. On X (previously Twitter), Florida Sen. Rick Scott wrote, “This joke bombed for a cause. It’s not humorous and it is not true. Puerto Ricans are wonderful folks and wonderful Americans!” Congressmember María Elvira Salazar tweeted that she was “disgusted” by the joke, paradoxically including: “This rhetoric doesn’t replicate GOP values.”
