She was worried about her parents’ reactions—especially her mom’s.
Actress Lim Ji Yeon gained worldwide fame and earned awards for her role in Netflix‘s hit K-Drama The Glory. However, her debut role also turned heads for equally graphic content.
After appearing in a few short films, Lim Ji Yeon made her official acting debut in the 2014 movie Obsessed, starring alongside actor Song Seung Heon. Because the plot revolved around a passionate love affair, there were a couple of steamy scenes between the co-stars.
The sex scenes were so graphic that Lim Ji Yeon recently spoke about them on the Aug 2 episode of You Quiz On The Block, sharing her initial thoughts on the role and how her mother reacted to the sex scenes.
Lim Ji Yeon was initially moved by the Obsessed script and wanted the opportunity to grow as an actress.
It wasn’t an easy role, looking back on it now. But I thought it was an incredible opportunity. I fell in love with the script [of ‘Obsessed’] and how it depicted the character Jong Ga Heun. It made me want to challenge myself. And I think the director picked up on my passion.

Since Lim Ji Yeon was only twenty-four back then, she was extremely worried about her parents’ reactions to the sex scenes. And because their first viewing of it would be on a massive screen at the premiere, her worries only increased.
I was so young. And I had some scandalous scenes. So I got really worried about my parents… what my parents would say about my movie debut. I was honestly terrified of what they’d think, watching me [in a sex scene] on the big screen.

In the end, Lim Ji Yeon didn’t have to worry. After her mom watched the entire movie, including the sex scenes, she praised her daughter for looking so beautiful.
My mom came to the premiere. [After the screening,] she gave me a big bouquet of flowers, and she told me, ‘My baby Ji Yeon, you looked so beautiful.’ That moment… It’s still one of the fondest memories that keeps me grounded and inspired.

Despite Lim Ji Yeon’s fears about taking on the mature role, her mom washed away all those anxieties with praise for her beauty and acting skills.
I did have my doubts about ‘Obsessed.’ Reading over the script at such a young age, I was struck with… fear. I thought, ‘Can I really pull this off? What if it ends up embarrassing my mother? Or scaring her? Or breaking her heart?’ Yeah, I was extremely worried about how my mom would respond to it. I’m her baby girl, after all… But she told me, ‘You were beautiful. You did a great job.’

Almost ten years later, her mom’s praise is still a heartwarming memory for Lim Ji Yeon.
