If You Like Boygenius, You may Love This British Trio

In I Like the Sound of That, a staffer goes deep on a music they’re at present obsessive about.

Last Friday, boygenius — the supergroup composed of singer-songwriters Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker — dropped the document, their extremely anticipated full-length album and their first main launch since 2018. They’ve dominated music news ever since, garnering glowing profiles in regards to the energy of their friendships and even stirring up slightly backlash too.

I like boygenius, however I don’t love them, and I’m not too massive to confess that their recognition is certainly a part of that equation. Listening to their music feels much less intimate and private as a result of I do know they’re all people’s child, not simply mine. But listening to the document has impressed me to revisit a lesser-known album that I liked in highschool: 2014’s If I Was, the sophomore album from indie people trio the Staves, produced by Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon.

The Staves are made up of British sisters Emily, Jessica, and Camilla Staveley-Taylor. Though they don’t fairly have boygenius’s rockstar edge, their work does characteristic seamless three-part concord and the looking out unhappiness of sister misfits. Sometimes their work is explicitly depressive, even diaristic, as on the sweetly grieving observe “Sadness Don’t Own Me.” But elsewhere, their portraits of disaffected youth are bristlier and extra impatient. On “Teeth White,” they despair at how they’ve tried to vary themselves to slot in, with little success: “I acquired my enamel white / And my denims tight / I acquired my hair lengthy / And it is nonetheless mistaken.” They draw the phrases out luxuriantly, till “mistaken” turns into a three-syllable phrase. It’s like they’re so bewildered by the calls for of magnificence that they don’t know how you can cope besides to howl about it. Through choruses of ohs and oos, their voices come collectively in disorienting swirls of tone and texture, till lastly they gasp: “I wanna know after I can / Stop.”

Of course, the Staves make very completely different music from boygenius: If I Was is an digital spin on people, not rock, and it’s extra preoccupied with loneliness than friendship. But if you need beautiful harmonies and unbridled feeling, and the document doesn’t fairly scratch the itch, “Teeth White” is a wonderful place to start out. ●
