Kim So Hye Talks About Training To Play A Boxer In Her Upcoming Drama With Lee Sang Yeob

-

Kim So Hye has shared her thoughts on her upcoming drama “My Lovely Boxer”!

Based on the award-winning novel of the same name, “My Lovely Boxer” is a new drama about a genius boxer named Lee Kwon Sook (Kim So Hye) and a cold-blooded sports agent named Kim Tae Young (Lee Sang Yeob), who doesn’t feel guilty about match fixing or resorting to any means necessary for the success of his athletes.

Former I.O.I member Kim So Hye will star in the drama as Lee Kwon Sook, a prodigy who emerged as a boxing star at the age of 17 before suddenly disappearing from the sports world entirely. When Kim Tae Young manages to track her down, she is living a new life as a teacher at a small kindergarten—but she winds up facing an unexpected turning point in her life due to the agent’s arrival.

Summing up the heart of the drama, Kim So Hye described the story as being about “the determination of a person who’s been thrown into misfortune.”

Explaining why she had been drawn to the role, the idol-turned-actress commented, “Through the choices Lee Kwon Sook makes in the face of misfortune and the emergence of her determination, she winds up shining bright in a radiant journey of growth, and I wanted to be a part of that.”

Kim So Hye went on, “Kwon Sook, who says ‘the important thing in boxing is standing up,’ is a character who—even if she falls countless times—unfalteringly gets back up again every time.”

“While working on this drama, I thought to myself that I wanted to resemble Kwon Sook in that regard,” she continued. “I also wanted to do a good job portraying the difference between professional boxer Lee Kwon Sook and the ordinary 20-something Lee Kwon Sook, who doesn’t know anything but boxing.”

In order to convincingly play the role of Lee Kwon Sook, Kim So Hye underwent high-intensity boxing training for three months. However, she confessed to feeling unsatisfied with her own skills towards the beginning of filming, recalling, “I filmed the drama while learning how to box, and I felt a lot of pressure at the beginning about having to pull it off within a given period of time. My skills weren’t as good as I’d have liked, so there were many times when I came up against a wall due to my own limits.”

By the time she filmed her final match scene, though, Kim So Hye was able to notice her own improvement. She proudly remarked, “I hope that you’ll keep an eye on my gradual journey of growth alongside Kwon Sook.”

As for what else viewers should keep an eye on in the drama, Kim So Hye noted, “All the characters in the drama are really charming. I hope you’ll empathize with each and every one of their stories and join them on their journey of growth.”

She went on to share, “I really gained a lot of strength while reading the original novel, and I wanted to convey the strength I’d gained to the viewers who watch the drama ‘My Lovely Boxer.’ Please show lots of interest and warm support for ‘My Lovely Boxer,’ which will premiere on August 21.”

“My Lovely Boxer” will air its first episode on August 21 at 9:45 p.m. KST.
