Teresa Taylor, Butthole Surfers Drummer and Face of Generation X, Dies at 60

-

Teresa Taylor, a drummer for the Texas acid-punk band Butthole Surfers who grew to become an emblem of Generation X aimlessness and anomie with a memorable look in Richard Linklater’s 1990 movie “Slacker,” died on Sunday. She was 60.

Her loss of life was introduced on Monday in a Twitter post by the band. The trigger was lung illness.

Cheryl Curtice, her accomplice and caregiver, wrote on Facebook that Ms. Taylor “handed away clean and sober, peacefully in her sleep, this weekend.”

“She was so courageous, even within the face of her horrible illness.”

Ms. Taylor, also called Teresa Nervosa, addressed her lengthy battle with what she known as an “finish stage” lung situation, which she didn’t determine, in a 2021 Facebook post.

“I don’t have most cancers or any harsh therapies,” she wrote, detailing her every day use of an oxygen tank in a small condo that had a tv mounted on a swivel fed by “mega cable,” and that she lived along with her cat, Snoopy. “I do know I smoked like a chimney and that is to be anticipated,” she added. “My spirits are up.”

Ms. Taylor was born on Nov. 10, 1962, in Arlington, Texas, to Mickey and Helen Taylor. Her father labored for IBM as a mechanical engineer. In her youth, she honed her abilities with the drumsticks performing with marching bands in Austin and Fort Worth with King Coffey, who would later be part of her as a part of Butthole Surfers’s distinctive twin-drummer approach, every enjoying in unison on separate kits.

She by no means thought-about drumming as a profession. “It was like, since you have been a woman, you didn’t consider having any future in it,” she was quoted as saying within the 2007 e book “Women of the Underground: Music” by Zora von Burden.

She finally dropped out of highschool and met the singer Gibby Haynes and the guitarist Paul Leary, who had based Butthole Surfers in San Antonio in 1981 whereas renting them house within the downtown Austin warehouse the place she was dwelling. In 1983, they invited her on a tour of California.

During Ms. Taylor’s tenure, which lasted a lot of the Nineteen Eighties, the band by no means scored a success document though they finally discovered success atop Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart with the tune “Pepper,” from 1996. But mainstream acceptance was very a lot not the purpose — as their title made clear.

Mixing a style for Dadaism and Nietzsche with a cyclone-force howl, Butthole Surfers proved audacious even by punk requirements. Concerts featured bare dancers, flames, bullhorns and slide exhibits that included morbid movies of surgical procedures and rubbish fires. “Their reside exhibits have been an assault on the senses,” noticed the music web site Rock and Roll True Stories in a 2021 retrospective.

With its hand-grenade musical strategy and black humor (their 1987 album “Locust Abortion Technician” featured a canopy picture of eerily joyful clowns in greasepaint impressed by the costumes of the serial killer John Wayne Gacy), the band attracted an ardent cult following amongst Gen X ironists and hollow-eyed nihilists (to not point out Kurt Cobain of Nirvana).

As the last decade drew to an in depth, Ms. Taylor left the band after experiencing seizures she attributed to the strobe lights the band used onstage. In 1993, she had surgical procedure for a mind aneurysm.

Despite her exit from the band she had made her title with, her largest style of fame was but to come back.

In “Slacker,” she made a memorable look enjoying an addlebrained opportunist wandering the streets attempting to promote a jar from a medical laboratory with purported pop-culture significance. “I do know it’s form of cloudy,” her character insists, “but it surely’s a Madonna Pap smear.”

The movie was an artfully ragged collection of vignettes about younger eccentrics performed largely by nonprofessionals knocking round Austin. Premiering within the early days of “Seinfeld,” it was a movie about nothing that captured the spirit of twentysomethings who, in line with the clichés of the day, cared about nothing and aspired to nothing.

The movie’s title grew to become a nickname for a era, and along with her indelible look on the movie’s poster and different packaging supplies, Ms. Taylor grew to become a face of it — a slack-jawed youth, her skinny arms thrust into her pockets in a gesture each bored and rebellious.

“We talked about doing a drugged-out freak form of character occurring about Madonna,” Ms. Taylor stated in a 2001 interview with The Austin American-Statesman, recalling her experiences on set. “I had a rock star perspective and an enormous ego. I demanded a hat and sun shades for the scene. I didn’t need my face to be seen. And it grew to become a picture.”

She would go on to work on the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Austin, according to The Austin Chronicle, and was writing a memoir about her time with the band.

Information about survivors was instantly obtainable.

As the years rolled by, her rock star swagger might have pale, however not, it appeared, her sense of irony. “I’m the final word slacker,” she advised The American-Statesman. “I’m on incapacity for melancholy, I get a verify each month and I watch lots of TV.”
