Last summer season on the Newport Folk Festival, followers of the singer Brandi Carlile had been handled to a surprising shock: a guest appearance by Joni Mitchell, who had been barely seen in public since recovering from an aneurysm in 2015. The joyful efficiency went old-school viral — a cross-generational feel-good sensation.
This month got here the second wave of the comeback: a nearly three-hour Joni Jam at Carlile’s Echoes Through the Canyon competition in Washington, that featured Mitchell singing and taking part in electrical guitar accompanied by acolytes: Annie Lennox, Allison Russell, Wendy and Lisa, Sarah McLachlan, and others.
On this week’s Popcast, a dialog about how Mitchell was obtained throughout her profession peak, the current steps she’s taken towards public efficiency and the way she is remaking her personal music in her later years.
