Elwood Edwards, AOL’s Iconic ‘You’ve Bought Mail’ Voice, Dead at 74

Elwood Edwards, the person behind the long-lasting “You’ve received mail!” greeting on AOL, has died. He was 74.

WKYC-TV Studios in Cleveland, Edwards’ former employer, introduced the news of his loss of life, which comes following an undisclosed “lengthy sickness.” Edwards had labored on the Ohio station as a “graphics guru, digicam operator and common jack-of-all-trades.”

He died simply sooner or later earlier than what would have been his seventy fifth birthday.

More than 30 years in the past, Edwards recorded 4 traces of dialogue for an organization referred to as America Online. Edwards’ spouse, Karen, labored on the then-small firm, which was initially referred to as Quantum Computer Services.

In a Youtube video from 2012, Edwards shared that his spouse overheard the previous CEO of America Online discussing including a voice to the then-upcoming AOL software program. That was when Karen volunteered her husband for the function.

Edwards in the end recorded 4 phrases for the corporate. Those 4 phrases delivered with human heat — “Welcome,” “You’ve received mail,” “File’s carried out,” and “Goodbye” — would go on to be seared into the brains of a whole technology of early net customers.

“I had no thought it might turn out to be what it did, I don’t suppose anyone did. Suddenly, AOL took off… I bear in mind standing in line at CompUSA and seeing [stacks of AOL CDs] and pondering, ‘My voice is on each a type of, and no one has a clue,’” Edwards stated in a 2019 episode of the podcast Silent Giants With Corey Cambridge.

Edwards was born in New Bern, North Carolina, and graduated from highschool within the state. His profession began when he labored in radio in highschool. He later transitioned to working in TV later in his life.

As for his iconic voice recordings for AOL, Edwards solely made a flat charge of $200 for recording his 4 traces for the corporate.
