This weekend I’ve … a half-hour, and I like spoofs.
‘Documentary Now!’
When to look at: Now, on Netflix or AMC+.
Season 4 of this sensible, foolish parody sequence is now on Netflix, and its targets embody “My Octopus Teacher,” “The September Issue” and Werner Herzog, as performed in a two-parter by Alexander Skarsgard. A giddy glee dwells in “Documentary Now!,” a way that the present’s creators and viewers are sharing in a deep and satisfying dorking out, the place stylistic hyper specificity is a particular foreign money. Even hilarious parodies are sometimes shallow, however “Now!” will be startlingly evocative in its ridiculousness, and it is ready to cram within the emotional arc of a characteristic into a brief run time. Tragically, this season is just six episodes.
… 90 minutes, and I put music on shuffle.
‘Great Performances: Celebrating 50 Years of Broadway’s Best’
When to look at: Friday at 9 p.m., on PBS. (Check native listings.)
Sutton Foster hosts this particular, honoring PBS’s “Great Performances” sequence with massive numbers from the final 50 years of Broadway musicals. In the absolute best method, it feels just like the expertise present on the final night time of essentially the most prestigious theater camp ever: Chita Rivera sings “All That Jazz”; André De Shields sings “So You Wanted to See The Wizard”; Donna McKechnie sings “The Music and the Mirror.” If your favourite a part of the Tonys is the performances, or if greatest-hits albums are your love language, watch this.
… a number of hours, and I like a phenomenal crumb.
‘The Great American Baking Show’
When to look at: Now, on the Roku Channel.
“The Great British Baking Show” has fallen on if not onerous times then at the very least bummerish times in latest seasons — much less enjoyable, much less earnest, extra contrived, racist. Thank goodness, then, for this season of “The Great American Baking Show,” which is a contented throwback to the glory days of the sequence, with well-calibrated challenges and endearing contributors who can’t recover from the truth that they’re on their favourite present. Technically, that is the American model’s sixth season, but it surely’s the primary on the Roku Channel, the primary with each Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith and the primary with the hosts Ellie Kemper and Zach Cherry, who do a terrific job.
