WWE executive chairman Vince McMahon is on medical leave from the company for the foreseeable future, according to the company’s recent 10-Q filing.
Why is Vince McMahon on medical leave?
In the filing Wednesday (via The Hollywood Reporter), the company revealed in a footnote that McMahon is on medical leave “until further notice,” after undergoing what the company calls “major spinal surgery.”
“On July 21, 2023, Mr. McMahon went on medical leave after undergoing major spinal surgery,” the company said. “Mr. McMahon will remain on medical leave until further notice but will remain Executive Chairman of the Company.”
Also of note in the filing is the fact that WWE disclosed that, last month, “federal law enforcement agents executed a search warrant and served a federal grand jury subpoena on Mr. McMahon.”
No charges were brought up in regard to their findings however, so it’s unclear what the search warrant was executed for, but McMahon has been facing a variety of accusations regarding allegedly paying off hush money to various people.
Last year, McMahon came under fire over various reports alleging the former chairman of having paid upwards of $12 million in hush money to various women to cover up claims of sexual misconduct and infidelity. An initial report alleged McMahon had paid $3 million in hush money to a woman that he was having an affair with. As a result of that report, McMahon stepped back from his role as chief executive officer of WWE while the board continued its investigation.
After stepping down as CEO of WWE following the reports, McMahon returned to the company in order to pursue a sale of it. That sale is now on the verge of closing, with WWE set to merge with Endeavor, the parent company of UFC, to create a standalone sports company.
